The Christmas season is just around the corner, and you know what that means: festive gatherings, chilly days, and deliciously warm and spicy mulled wine! The Professor has always enjoyed a mug of this classic, cockle warming beverage but has noted a few problems when sipping a home-made version of this Chrismassy concoction.

The Problems: Most good people have left spices languishing in their cupboards for far too long, leaving them dry, old and flavourless. In addition, it’s often difficult for the average ‘muller’ to find the sweet spot for each spice. They must be left in the wine long enough for all the rich flavours to come through, but removed at just the right moment so that no bitter notes remain. Cooked citrus can release some off-notes as well, freshly ground nutmeg is difficult the completely strain from the finished product, and fresh ginger, if not properly prepared, can be just plain dull.

Achieving balance and consistency in a mulled wine is nearly impossible given the aforementioned problems.

Forgot to tell everyone – I am going to be on vacation for the next couple days and then following that the yearly IPCPR for Retailers and Manufacturers will be taking place so I will be taking a short hiatus to do what I do best – not a damn thing! I am sure you all will be able to see the latest re-regurgitation of information from the companies on the new cigars this year and I will do my best to re-re-repeat the same info but at the same time, I don’t want to be too much like the other ‘blogs’ out there.

Long story short – Give me a little and I’ll be back, I’m busy falling asleep on a lounge chair next to the pool!

For the greatest country on earth, once a year we celebrate our Independence and the way of living that the rest of the world can only attempt to emulate. Irregardless of political banterings, personal indifferences or speculations of the future – our country was founded on thoughts, ideals and visions that not only ensures ones ‘rights’ and ‘freedoms’ but encourages them to take very opportunity possible to “… hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Please, take a moment to remember the basic and core components of why and how this country was founded. If you are out with your family, instead of talking about the latest gossip – if only for 10 minutes – educate and challenge your children and family about our great country, the Founding Fathers, The Boston Tea Party, The Declaration of Independence and most importantly, ensuring our children know and acknowledge these rights and freedoms.

Cigar Nut Happy Fathers Day

I hope that all of you men with children take this day, not only as a chance to spend time with your families, your children or you fathers – but it is also an excuse for YOU to indulge, to have that extra helping at dinner, a little extra bourbon in the glass or a slight nod in agreement that instead of heading in, you’ll have that second cigar.

With my wife pregnant with our first child, this holiday has a mixed – bitter sweet aspect to it. Is this my first fathers day as an actual father – or is this my last fathers day without being considered a ‘dad’. Technicalities, perspective and opinion all contribute – but I guess for the sake of argument, I am just looking forward to my baby girl, Zoe Jane, being in my arms next year – celebrating Fathers Day.

As some of you may have noticed, the past few weeks The Cigar Nut has been a little – quiet. Nothing wild or extreme but instead, an attack in the form of a head cold. It always amazes me that how no matter what we do – a head cold has the ability to completely halt our hobby. This is especially true if the dreaded sinus issues come into play and we are left with a void of smell and flavors – two of the main and essential components to our habit, if you remove the whole nicotine aspect from the equation.

Well – with that being said – I decided to use this ‘down time’ as a way to really push and test my palate and honestly I suggest everyone make the mental note and try it for themselves – if nothing else but why not. As we know – the human palate while extremely useful has a huge varying degree of acceptable and dismissible flavor combinations that we each prefer but have we ever sat down and thought ‘why’? Without getting too much into the science behind it – lets jump down the rabbit hole and see what kind of an experience I noticed.
