Cigar Review: Tierra Santa by Hermosa Cigars

The Tierra Santa by Hermosa Cigars pays homage to Nicaragua, Tierra Santa translating to “Holy Land.” The cigar features tobaccos grown by Hermosa’s farm and is a Jalapa/Esteli blended Nicaraguan puro. The Tierra Santa is manufactured by Noel Rojas at Tabacaer Aromas de Jalapa factory. The Tierra Santa was released earlier this year (2014) and was available exclusively at Underground Cigar Shop in Fort Worth, Texas for 90 days (Oct. 25 – Dec. 25) as a special collaboration between Don Wiggins of Underground and Scott de la Pena of Hermosa. The cigars will be available after the 90 day exclusive to other retailers.

Vitolas: 5×50 Robusto ($9), 6×42 Corona ($9), 6×52 Torpedo ($10)

Blend: Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano Hybrid (Grown by Hermosa)

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Appearance: The Tierra Santa corona features a flawless chocolate colored wrapper that is topped with a triple cap. The band is yellow with gold accents and black lettering and really stands out in a humidor.

Pre-Light: To the nose the Tierra Santa has a pepper and cedar note with strong cinamon flavors on the cold draw.

1st Third: The Tierra Santa opens with a deep chocolate flavor and hints of coffee. There is only a slight spice that just barely lets you know it is there, not a pepper but baking spice note.

2nd Third: The spice picks up in the second third of the Tierra Santa and really plays a role in the flavors. The coffee notes deepen in to an espresso and balance with the spice. The retrohale gives a slight dark cherry sweetness to the cigar.

Last Third: This last third of the Tierra Santa is very flavorful. The flavors continue to be espresso and spice with a caramel sweetness in the background. The last third brings about a very complex flavor to the palate that smooth and very enjoyable.

Construction: (A+) The construction of the Tierra Santa was excellent, there were no issue, the ash was tight and held well, and the draw was perfect.

Burn: (A+) The Tierra Santa had a great burn, nice and even the entire time with no touch ups or relights needed. The cigar also burned nice and cool and kept the smoke smooth.

Final Assessment: Tierra Santa from Hermosa Cigars is one solid offering. This cigar is a medium-plus strength smoke that delivers in flavor with a depth that hits the palate just right.

Rating: (BOX WORTHY) I am currently rating this cigar as box worthy but I most definitly think this cigar has more potential and time is going to be very kind to it. I look for this cigar to really blow people away.
