The Cigar Nut

There are few things in the world that seem to be great by themselves but excellent when paired with another – sometimes food, drinks or even activities. I am sure we can all relate to having that perfect creamy milk and cookie combination, the sweet burn and cooling of hot wings with ranch, the kick of a long island ice tea but not many can write ‘having a great cigar while playing poker’ off their list although they tend to go together better than many might first assume. It is hard to describe but I have fond memories of the light sting in the cheeks that was caused from over-laughter, when my heart started to beat a little harder placing that sketchy bet or when we all knew another round was needed to be poured because someone lit another cigar after throwing in their anti. But – for many, premium cigars are just as familiar when playing poker as mumbled cuss words from a bet gone wrong. I will say though, there is nothing better than playing a real money poker game and not only having fun, but walking away a couple dollars ahead.

Blind Review #2

Eric

CIGAR #2: Very dark, rough wrapper – maybe Brazilian Mata Fina – 6 inches x 7/8 inches diameter – very oily – decent construction – 1 large vein – absolutely a maduro – very leathery smell – firmly packed – foot has leather & dark cherry smell – 1 inch in the burn is pretty crooked – dirty grey ash w/ brown tint – dark cherry & chocolate flavours – has a Liga Privada essence to it – burn starting to correct itself – ash pretty flaky – lots of smoke – good draw – smoke has a leather & woodsy aroma – burn still goes wonky & then self corrects – flavours are chocolate and light toasted notes
- had to touch up crooked burn – last third has black coffee flavours – leather is back at the end.

Brian

Appearance and construction: Beautiful dark, oily wrapper, without measuring I’d guess a 56/58ish RG. The cigar burned fairly evenly, but I’ve had to do multiple relights so far (not sure why, my RH isn’t too high in my humidor).

Behind The Stick:

Alright – so this is a cigar that literally was sent to me out of the blue that I didn’t even know existed. I got a pair of them from a buddy on one of the cigar forums, and then @youngbuck sent me one along with a few other smokes! Since I had a few of these around, I decided to light one up and have it as my commute cigar back home from work. When I got home, I mentioned the odd size ( spoiler, I like this size ) on twitter and heard a lot of good things said about them and thus lead to some research. The Oliva V has always been a ‘go to staple’ of mine – when I don’t know what to have, I can always fall back on the V and be happy. Lets see if this little brother of the line lives up to the name!

Well, the story of the No 4 is that Oliva released these to a small number of European shops, and an even smaller number to American shops – but only if there were in attendance of the TAA trade show in Cabo, Mexico. This makes for a great ‘must have’ series, simply dude to the limited availability of them! From what I have been able to find, the blend is essentially the same, nothing ‘major’ has been changed but rather minimizing the size down to a nice corona feel and making something that fits that daily commute, for me, just about perfect.

Whata You Smokin?

Alright – into week two of the What am I smoking segment. I have heard a couple people say they like it while a few others could live with or without it so please let me know if you all want me to continue posting my weekly wrap up of smokes. This past week I was out of town for business so I only had 3 ‘after work’ smokes so I was going to combine the two weeks into one but I figured, what the hell better 3 than zero.

January 9th, 2012
– It was Monday and I was not really sure what I was in the mood for so tried to bring a decent variety of smoke with me to work.
