The Cigar Nut

Today I will be reviewing the Nording by Rocky Patel.  This is a special addition cigar produced to honor pipe maker Erik Nording.

Here are the stats:

Origin : Honduras
Size Name : Toro Grande
Size : 6 x 58
Wrapper : Costa Rican Maduro
Binder : Mexican
Filler : Honduran / Nicaraguan

Cost:  $90.00/ 20

This large cigar had a very earthy smell and taste on cold draw.  After toasting the foot and taking the first puffs, there is a very creamy flavor.  There is also a slight hint of spice on the front end of the cigar.

The first third presented a great creamy flavor.  The burn is a little crooked, but the ash is holding strong.  The spice has gone away in the mouth but still is present slightly on through the nose.

At the half way point, the cigar is excellent.  There seems to be a “pipe tobacco” element to the room note and flavor.  The burn has straightened out and the flavor is heavy on the cocoa.  There is also a very large amount of blue smoke produced.

The end of the cigar has produced a flavor that I liken to licorice.  It almost reminds me of a Christmas flavor.  This is a very good cigar in construction, appearance and flavor.

Rating:

Flavor:  10 (x4.4)=44

Construction:  9 (x 3.3)= 29.7

Appearance: 9 (x .9)=8.1

Value:  9 (x 1.2)= 10.8

Buy again:  Yes=1

Recommend: Yes=1

Total:  94.6

The flavors were all fine but the cigar just lacked life complexity and most everything else that makes a cigar truly enjoyable. Theres also a coffee flavor that has a good helping of cream added in. Fortunately that negative flavor is relegated to the bottom half of my olfactory system.

I agree with your review. It’s a good smoke although not one of the best Rocky has made. As you have said, it’s a cigar I will have in my humidor to be smoked every once in a while.

There is also a lack of depth to the overall flavor profile which is odd for blend thats billed as full-bodied.
