Its that time of year again – last minute gift purchases, rushed ‘romantic’ ideas, spending more money than you want to and for some of the lucky – a day to kick back and enjoy a great cigar. My wife and I are pretty good about the last minute mad dash to get a present or plan an interesting dinner or just stay in and watch a movie together but one great thing about her is that she always lets me have a cigar on Valentines day. This year I think I am going to be smoking a cigar that has been in my humidor for about 3 years now – a Cohiba Robusto I picked up from La Casa Del Habano in Cancun, Mexico. This was the trip where I proposed to my wife and the day after she said yes – we went to LCDH, killed about 45 minutes ooo-ing and aaa-ing over the selection and she never even told me to stop gawking. I grabbed the pair of robusto’s and had one at the resort pool at 11am, drinking a margarita, reading a book and listening to the waves crash against the beach in the distance – damn near heaven.

The second I brought home and had planned to smoke just a few months later for New Years. One thing led to another and I did not end up smoking it that year but I swore I would smoke it on my honeymoon – I took it with me but again, never got around to smoking it. I have other Cuban cigars and have smoked them without concern, but for some reason this single stick always seems to ‘deserve more’ than I can offer. The right weather, music, whiskey, lighter and even the company must be ‘perfect’ in my mind. This cigar has aged beautifully, the wrapper slowly taking on a darker shade – the aroma getting more intense yet refined at the same time and the feel of the wrapper taking on a much more velvety sensation. Sure, I am probably looking into this cigar too much, but I am sure we have all had that ‘one special cigar’ that we just can’t smoke. Maybe its from a family member or a friend, from a memorable event or just a rare or hard to find smoke – I urge you to find that cigar today, set aside some time, get your environment perfect and enjoy that cigar to the fullest.
